Chapter 10 WAIS: Searching Databases on the Internet

If you don't have a WAIS client on your system you can use WAIS by choosing from the following methods. All of these aren't always available.

It seems that Telnet access to WAIS clients is getting to be very scarce

Here is one to try --

Finland: Telnet to info.funet.fi and use info as a login name.

WAIS databases are also available throgh Gopher ...

Point your gopher to the Gopher-WAIS gateway at University of Minnesota
Point your gopher to the Gopher server at University of Lund , Lund Sweden and then choose the menu item dealing with All WAIS databases .
Point your gopher to WAIS Sources at Washington and Lee University

Example 10.1 WAIS Searching Several Databases with SWAIS using Telnet

Start a Telnet session with a server at the Finnish University and Research Network and use wais as a login name.

Example 10.2 Using Gopher to Access WAIS

There are lots of sites on the Internet that give access to WAIS through Gopher. For this example we're using the server at Arizona State University.

Point your gopher to info.asu.edu - the Arizona State University Gopher server , choose Other Sources (Explore the Internet), and then choose WAIS Sources (Wide Area Information System)
