WebExhibits
WebExhibits has a relatively few number of high-quality exhibits or expository sites. It's the quality of the sites and their content that attracted my attention. The site looks really good and seems to have a lot of potential. You can search the contents of WebExhibits or browse through a few categories. The site presets some exhibits and also has links to outstanding sites. I first read about it on NetSurfer Science and followed the link to the exhibit about Daylight Savings Time.

Gotta go!

books from India
I ordered and received an autographed copy of Hacking Truths (mentioned previously) from Firstandsecond.com. Prices elsewhere were thirty to forty dollars. The price at Firstandsecond.com was less than $6.50!! I ordered it and postage put the price at about $25.00 - still cheaper than buying it from a place in the US -- and I got an autographed copy. I checked the price on one of my books. The price from Firstandsecond.com is similar to the price in the US.

Hacking young
ACM Technews had a link to " Kids today: How to encourage them to do good online." It's about getting young folks who may be interested in hacking - or what's much worse, cracking, to think about programming. In reading it I found about Ankit Fadia. It tunrs out that he's been hacking since he was 12, runs the excellent Web site Hacking Truths, and wrote his book "The Unofficial Guide to Ethical Hacking" when he was 16. The Web site seems very useful and I'm looking forward to see if I can get my hands on a copy of the book.

Engineering and Science
This week's Researchbuzz-extra, #39, by Tara Calishain mentions a site that I think is pretty neat. The site is titled "Did, you Ever Wonder?" and it's URL is http://www.lbl.gov/wonder/index.html. The site is published by Lawrence Berkeley National Labs. The site holds a series of articles that spot light people at the lab and some of the questions they answer through their work. For example:
"About a better way to light up the darkness?"
Michael Siminovitch, lighting scientist, created stylish lighting fixtures that are safer, provide better illumination, and use one fourth the energy.

The articles are attractive and well written, and a nice combination of science, engineering, and design.

Movie Reviews
I read about Rotten Tomatoes in Tara Calishain's excellent Researchbuzz-extra . (Sign up if you haven't done so already.) Rotten Tomatoes is a great site for reading reviews and getting ratings about movies. The thing I liked the best was that the critics reviews were averaged and displayed on their own, separate from the reviews of the public. I like this better than the review format at The Internet Movie Database but IMDB is a great site also.

It's nice to see that there's still room on the Web for a variation of a good idea.

If you just want to read reviews in a whole pile of papers then use the
Movie Review Query Engine

Here's one I just found U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops - Movie Reviews.

Cut!

Hooray for Chowhound!
It's been a long time since I posted anything. I guess the fall semester and writing deadlines caught up with me. I also had a problem with the he configuration of my site at my hosting service Interland. It turned out that no script could pass variables if POST was the method used for a form. it took me a while to track it down, then they (of course) said there were no changes in the setup and my scripts were my problem. Funny thing though, it turned out that they had a situation they had to clear up, but they haven't told me that yet. BUT, the good news is my scripts are fine now. Sorry for the digression.

I read something about Chowhownd.com and visited and realized that this is a GREAT site and it's where I belong! The first sentence of Chowhound's FAQ says it all, "A chowhound is someone who spends nearly every waking moment planning his/her next meal. " It's a great site with articles and message boards. I love it!

Writing Effectively Online
Karen Hartman reminded me about the Web site Computers and Composition. It's aimed at people who teach writing. But it's also useful to folks who write. I liked the article Writing Effectively Online: How to Compose Hypertext, Alysson Troffer.
