This press release Press Releases - Key Website Research Highlights Gender Bias, describes research that shows that men and women (students) demonstrated marked differences in the appearance of their self-designed Web pages. Having worked for several years with students engaged in that same activity, that result comes as no surprise to me.
In my experience (though I have no research on this) other differences in designs often appear. I think students in different age groups design differently, as well as students with different levels of Internet experience. I am regularly amazed how something tacky like an annoying animation or background sound seems really cool to most first-time Web page creators and many students in my Internet class.
